Cleft Lip and Palate:
Diagnosing Clets
As ultrasound technology improves, more clefts are being diagnosed in-utero
before the baby is born. Most families agree that it is better to learn
if their child has a cleft lip before the birth, in order to give them
time to better understand this condition. Typically, families will then
meet with a cleft lip and palate team, in order to prepare for the delivery.
Children with an isolated cleft palate, especially if they also have a
small jaw, need to be seen by a geneticist to rule out Pierre Robin Sequence,
Velocardiofacial syndrome, or other syndromes.
